Dear Baldwin Park High School Community,
Over the past year, our school community has navigated the process of California Assembly Bill 3074, which requires public schools to discontinue the use of certain Native American mascots and team names unless a partnership is established with a federally recognized tribe.
Today, I am pleased to share an exciting update. Through the dedication, advocacy, and collaboration of our students, school leadership, and community supporters, the federally recognized Pala Band of Mission Indians (Pala Tribe) has agreed to partner with Baldwin Park High School and consent to our continued use of the “Braves” name.
This milestone is the result of efforts organized by our students, ASB leaders, staff, administrators, and tribal representatives. Throughout this process, our students have demonstrated tremendous pride in their school while also approaching this work with respect, thoughtfulness, and a commitment to learning.
While we are grateful to have secured consent to continue the “Braves” name, our work is not complete. This partnership represents much more than preserving a tradition. It is an opportunity to build meaningful relationships, deepen cultural understanding, and ensure that the “Braves” identity is represented with respect, authenticity, and purpose.
In the coming months, we will work alongside representatives from the Pala Tribe to implement a comprehensive plan that incorporates Native American education, representation, and cultural initiatives throughout our school community.
To support this important work, a collaborative group of school and district leadership, students, community members, and representatives from the Pala Tribe has met and continues to be in communication. Together, this group will help guide the next phase of implementation and ensure that our partnership remains meaningful and impactful for years to come.
The “Braves” name holds deep meaning for our school community. As we move forward, we remain committed to honoring that legacy through education and partnership with the Pala Tribe.
Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to sharing more updates in the months ahead.
With gratitude,
Deborah Madrigal
Principal of Baldwin Park High School
