Deborah Madrigal Named as Principal of Baldwin Park High School

The decision was made during the BPUSD Board of Education meeting on May 13, 2025, where Board Members unanimously voted in support of Madrigal’s appointment, with one member absent.

Madrigal is a familiar and respected figure at Baldwin Park High, where she previously served for more than two decades in roles including Education Specialist, Teacher on Special Assignment, Dean of Students, and Assistant Principal. After leaving BPUSD in 2012, she went on to serve as principal at Benjamin Franklin High School in Los Angeles Unified and later at John Burroughs High School in Burbank Unified, where she led for six years before retiring.

“I got my 30-year pin, but I always felt like I never fully finished here in Baldwin Park,” Madrigal said. “I missed the energy, I missed helping, and most of all I missed the students.”

Upon returning to BPHS as interim principal, Madrigal said she was moved by the positive changes on campus, including upgrades to facilities such as the gym, pool area, quad, classroom technology, and the growing Career Technical Education programs.

“I’m excited to be back and to be in it,” Madrigal said. “My focus is making sure all students get the best instruction possible and know about the various opportunities available to them, whether that’s local BPACE, college, or career pathways.”

Madrigal, who began her career in education at just 18, said she always knew she wanted to be a teacher. “I asked for a chalkboard for Christmas when I was six,” she said with a smile. “I used to play school all the time.”

Her drive to move into administration came from a desire to have a broader impact. “As a teacher, I could impact my students, but I saw so many things we could change to make everyone’s journey better,” she said. “Approaching the bigger picture is why I wanted to do it.”

Madrigal is known by colleagues for her compassionate leadership, approachable style, and dedication to student success. The BPUSD community has warmly welcomed her return and now celebrates her new role as a permanent leader of the Brave community.

“The District is proud to welcome back Ms. Madrigal to the BPUSD family. She brings with her 24 years of knowledge, and her deep-rooted community ties are something we all look forward to building upon,” said Superintendent Dr. Froilan N. Mendoza
