We also are working harder then ever to link classroom instruction to the State Standards expected of all California students. We feel our improved instruction will help better prepare our students for the new California High School Exit Examination and the CAT-6 test (which recently the SAT-9 as a standard for measuring student achievement.) We believe the Social Studies Program at Baldwin Park High School will help students meet lives challenges as well as be prepared for further education. You may also contact teachers after 4:00pm by calling (626) 960-5431 and follow directions to leave a voice mail message with the teacher you need to speak to. Most teachers are prompt about answering parent’s calls and are very happy for their input and interest in their child’s education. Students are also free do contact faculty in this manner. Senior Project In each of the four years here, every student is required to complete a research project, leading up, ultimately, to the Senior Project. In the Social Studies classes students are required to give speeches and prepare a poster display. This becomes especially important during the senior year when students do a commitment poster and speech that are a major part of the Senior Project, which is required for graduation (see the Senior Project on the B.P.H.S. website). We want to reassure both parents and students that the Social Studies department already had a speech requirement and in most classes required a poster or project. Students are therefore not doing any more work than before. Their efforts are just placed under a different program and name. There is no excuse for students not being successful in this undertaking, as they have consistently done well before. Students can count on help and guidance from their social studies instructors in this part of the Senior Project. Homework The homework policy varies from teacher to teacher in Social Studies classes but certain things apply to the whole department. For example all teachers allow make-up assignments and homework from legitimate absences. Homework is at least part of the grade in every class. Individual teacher requirements in this area may be obtained from their class syllabus or by referring to their web site. |
